Fiji.jpgDiscovering The South Pacific

"Ours was no normal cruise, and these were no normal ports of call. The 650-passenger Discovery was nearing the end of a two-month arc around the South Pacific, an epic voyage tracing the sort of route once followed by tramp steamers and fearless Polynesians in outrigger canoes. My parents had invited me to join them for the last leg, a 14-night cruise from New Zealand to Tahiti.

Their generous gesture may have been intended to spice up their conversations after seven weeks of togetherness. But with exotic harbors in places such as Vanuatu, Fiji's Yasawa Islands and Samoa, we easily had as much to talk about as the locals seemed to have about us."
