Travel Tips for Persons with Disabilities
If you are a person with a disability or are going to be traveling with a disabled person, there are a few things that you should be aware of first.
You want to make the entire traveling process as smooth and convenient as possible, and this means making sure that you are informed and understanding before planning to go anywhere.
The first step is to make specific needs known. You will need to take an active role in regards to letting people know along the way that there is a disability that they are going to need to accomodate.
You will need to acquire vital information before travel decisions are made, determine specific individual needs, and contact all involved service providers to ensure that these needs will be met.
Remember, if one company does not offer the proper equipment and services to meet these needs, there will be ten others that will, so do not fret.
Persons with disabilities should never have to settle when traveling, so never take second best.
Keep in mind that services will vary greatly from one carrier to another, as one carrier may be more equipped to handle your needs than another.
Medical documents should always be on hand, and can even be to your benefit. For instance, on domestic flights, many Canadian charterers and scheduled airlines will offer a discounted fare for personal attendants, however necessary medical information will have to be provided in most cases before these services are rendered.
It is vital that persons with disabilities take their time and get travel plans right, down to the very last detail. This includes selecting the right flight, making proper reservations, and even choosing the seat that is going to be most convenient, dependent upon the given circumstances.
With these helpful tips in mind, you or anyone you know with a disability will be able to travel more easily and without worry.
