Travel Tip: New Restrictions Now In Effect For Batteries

lithium.jpgIf you are traveling through the United States, it is important to note that with the change of the calendar year to 2008, we now have an entirely new set of rules for packing batteries both in carry-on baggage and checked baggage.

The U.S. Department of Transport has deemed that lithium batteries are a fire hazard, especially those that are loose in your checked-baggage. As such they have new regulations that basically state that you are no longer permitted to have loose lithium batteries in your checked baggage. The reasoning is that the metal connectors on lithium batteries can come in contact with other metal objects in your bag and if so, could cause an explosive reaction/fire.

Any batteries that are inside actual devices like laptops, digital cameras etc. are not a problem. You are able to carry as many as two spare lithium batteries in your carry-on bag provided they are a) in a separate plastic bag and b) are between 8 and 25 grams in size (most conventional batteries are).

If you do tend to carry/pack a lot of electronic equipment/gadgets it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with these new rules before an airport security employee takes away your precious spare batteries.
