hawaii_snow.jpgSun, Sand & Snow: Hawaii's Big Island

"I've read that there are ten distinct microclimates on the Big Island, and it's a challenge to prepare for them all. Deep down I am not willing to accept the possibility that just a short drive can separate the thick, moist heat of a jungle from thin-aired, wind-blasted snowfields.

Highway 200, also known as Saddle Road, used to be a treacherous death wish of a passage across the island's interior, but it seems to have been pacified in recent years. It leads to the summit of Mauna Kea, the site of the University of Hawaii's thirteen astronomical observatories, shiny geodesic domes of white and chrome perched on the mountainside snow as if placed there by hippie Eskimos."
