Porter Airlines Takes Bite Out of Big Apple

If you live in Canadian cities such as Ottawa, Montreal etc. chances are you have heard of Porter Airlines, the exclusive commercial air carrier for the Toronto Island airport which began service in the fall of 2006. There is no better way to get in and out of downtown Toronto than flying into the Island airport which is just minutes from the beating heart of downtown Toronto. Porter's service has been lauded by many travelers, and not surprisingly the airline is now flourishing and seeking to build on its success.

Porter Air has just announced that starting on March 31, 2008 they will begin their expansion into the United States with 7 daily roundtrip flights to Newark Liberty International airport which is just 15 miles from New York City. Adding international flights to key urban destinations is a logical next step for this short-haul carrier and the demand for the downtown Toronto-New York route figures to be high. One-way tickets are expected to go for $120 CDN, a very reasonable fare for such a convenient service.

"Flights between Toronto and the New York metropolitan area have never been more convenient, TCCA offers passengers a time savings of up to two hours or more compared to flying out of busy, congested Pearson Airport. Porter Airlines is committed to providing business and leisure customers with an affordable, stylish and seamless experience. We've been successfully delivering on this promise for 15 months and are ready to bring it to New York."
There is no doubting the formula for success that Porter Airlines has established. Perhaps the only achilles heal for Porter at this time is the size of the Island airport. How much more capacity can they realistically add to an airport footprint that is quite small and land-locked with no room to grow. Time will tell on that, but in the meantime Porter should continue to be a favorite with urban Canadian travelers.
