Obama and McCain Miss Big on Travelers' Issues

There has been no topic more commonly in discussion as of late than the presidential election.

In this intense campaign, Senators Barack Obama and John McCain have talked about an array of different issues, but have not dealt enough with travel industry issues as much as the general population would like.

People are simply not impressed with the lack of attention that has been paid to this matter, and in the tough economic times of today, these issues are very relevant to Americans' pocketbooks and therefore should of course be brought more to attention and taken more seriously by not only these presidential candidates, but politicians all around the world.

Obama's transportation paper
blames:

A record number of flight delays on an outdated air-traffic control system and overscheduling at airports already operating at full capacity. Moreover, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has failed to work well with our nation's air traffic controllers, neglecting to treat them with the respect they deserve. Obama will work with Congress to modernize the nation's air traffic control system and he will direct the new FAA Administrator to work cooperatively with the frontline air traffic controllers to restore morale and improve working conditions and operations at this agency.

On the other hand, from McCain's camp, he is apparently interested more in privatizing or contracting out air traffic control, and:

He's for allowing foreign airlines to compete on U.S. routes, and for more foreign investment in the U.S. airline industry. The AFL-CIO opposes these things, but needless to say, many other people support these ideas.

We certainly hope that the presidential candidates start to make more of an issue of this, especially here in Canada because these sorts of issues affect us as well.
