Newfoundland Makes Fodor's 2008 List

Fodor's recently released a featured list entitled "Where We're Going in '08: 7 Places Americans Have Yet to Discover" and Newfoundland was one of the destinations to make this year's edition.
In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue and discovered North America. Right? Wrong. Leif Eriksson earned that distinction when he landed on Newfoundland back in 1000 AD. This isolated Atlantic Canadian province has been greeting seafarers ever since. Few of them, however, are U.S. citizens. That's a shame because Eriksson's excavated settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows is well worth seeing; as is the fjord-like landscape of Gros Morne National Park, which visually evokes his homeland. We couldn't agree more, Newfoundland is a rustic gem that will only grow in popularity as the appetite for less 'touristy' vacation destinations continues to grow.
St. John's, which drew praise from Fodor's is one of Canada's oldest cities. Or is it 'the' oldest city? That depends on who you ask. The 'oldest city' claim is one that has been hotly debated in recent days as Quebec City received $400 million in funding to celebrate its 400th birthday and subsequent branding as Canada's oldest city. St. John's is not taking this claim by Quebec City lying down. They genuinely believe their city is Canada's oldest.
Newfoundland and Labrador's minister of tourism waded into the debate over Canada's oldest city Thursday, claiming the honour for St. John's, N.L. ... "Let's take this logically. If fishermen from the English country had equipment and so on, don't you think it's logical that they would have left people here year-round to keep an eye on that kind of stuff? ... From the historical context, we're saying that yes, people were here, that they stayed here year-round, that they kept eye on all their fishing equipment. ... "That's our story and we're sticking to it"No matter which city is the oldest, only one city made Fodor's 2008 list - St. John's, Newfoundland. That's our story, and we're sticking to it.
