If it's Tuesday this must be Belgium

By Dana McMahan
Cooking in our "kitchen" at le Mas du Clos de l'Escarrat When planning travel overseas it's tempting to take the Reader's Digest Condensed Book version of a trip. Travellers feel they'll get the highlights of a few places and see what they're all about.

Hopping from place to place, spending most of their time on trains or budget flights though, leaves travelers exhausted and in no position to appreciate what they're experiencing. And with a limited amount of time in each city, they can't begin to scratch the surface of a destination, instead just skimming over the top tourist spot.

They return home with a confusing, vague patchwork of memories, not sure where they toured that castle and which church that was in their parade of photos.

Though it's difficult to give up places on the itinerary, it is well worth missing one city in order to spend quality time in another. It means the difference in trudging through a "must-see" museum before catching another train and relaxing at a sidewalk cafe watching the passersby while you sip coffee or wine. It could even mean the difference between grabbing a packaged meal in an airport or shopping at the local market for dinner to cook in your flat or villa.

My rule of thumb (after much experience) is a minimum of four nights per city.

You'll also find a cost savings when you're not budgeting for so much transportation, and when you book accommodation for several nights in a row you may benefit from a price break.
