hydra_erato.jpgHydra Island: A Great Escape From Athens

With over 3000 jaw-dropping islands, Greece is still the vacation of choice for many. If you begin your Greek getaway in Athens you have some options for quick day-trips. Aegina, Angistri, Poros, Hydra and even Spetses are close enough to go for the day by ferry. Spetses is the choice for the aristocrat. But if you're looking for small, quaint and still somewhat elegant, Hydra's a solid pick. The island itself didn't really get noticed by tourists until Henry Miller made mention of Hydra in his book the 'Colossus of Marousi' in the 1950's. No cars are permitted on the island, so it really isn't that far removed from Miller's enchanting vision decades ago. Water taxis and donkeys will take you up and down the beaches, shoreline or up the hill for a spectacular viewpoint.

Tucked away in a residential area of Hydra are two semi-detached homes, called Erato Villas. 5 minutes from the harbour and perched up on a hill with breathtaking vistas and sunsets, the vibe is understated, down-home beauty and relaxation.
