Gramercy Park Hotel - New York

gramercy_1.jpg

The Gramercy Park Hotel is located next to one of the rare 'private parks' in the United States in the heart of the Big Apple. Built in 1925, the hotel is steeped in heritage and luxury. After the initial builders sold the hotel in 1958 to Herbert Weissberg, a famous New York hotelier, it instantly became one of New York's hottest hotels that developed a reputation for treating celebrities well, and also for permitting what we could describe as 'celebrity behaviour'. In other words, the hotel let celebrities do their thing ie, consume and smoke what they wanted. Hence the reason why Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Madonna etc. all called this hotel home at one time or another.

In 2003 the hotel was sold to famous hotel designer Ian Schrager and has since completely renovated the hotel from roof to lobby. While still being mindful of its bohemian roots, the hotel is now a pillar of modern luxury integrated into a 20th century historic theme. The rooftop bar (The Roof Club) features a light installation that is absolutely stunning (see picture above).

The Gramercy Park Hotel is luxury personified and as such, it is by no means for the budget-minded traveler with rooms ranging from $500-3000+. Whether you are looking for a total lux'd-out vacation or a chic venue for a meeting and a single-malt scotch, the Gramercy Park Hotel should be high on your list in New York City.
