Finally, a USA Rail Pass

By Dana McMahan
At last. Those of us who have traveled in other, more enlightened parts of the world have long bemoaned the lack of a rail pass in America like those in Europe. Amtrak only offered its USA Rail Passes to international visitors, leaving residents out in the cold.

Finally, though, you can buy a pass that allows travel throughout the entire United States. It comes with limits to how many times you can use the pass, unfortunately, but it's a start. Three offers are available:

A segment is considered one leg. Amtrak gives this example:

Because we don't have a direct route from Washington, DC to Oklahoma, City, OK, you could ride the Capitol Limited train from Washington to Chicago (segment 1), then ride the Texas Eagle train from Chicago to Fort Worth (segment 2) and finally ride the Heartland Flyer train from Fort Worth to Oklahoma, City (segment 3). This journey from Washington to Oklahoma City would use three of your allowable segments.

You can book online or by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245).
