Electrical Matters

The majority of people are really not educated enough when it comes to using electrical appliances in a foreign country.

If you are going to be traveling outside of Canada or the United States, there are a few issues here that you are going to want to be aware of.

For one, both Canada and the United States use 110-volt electricity, while most countries outside of North American use 220-volt electricity.

Another important fact to be aware of is that the electrical outlets outside Canada and the United States are usually different from those in North America, so if you are traveling to a foreign destination you are going to need to bring a plug adapter along if you need to use an electrical appliance.

Are you aware what the differences between converters, transformers, and plug adapters are? There are a few major differences that you need to understand.

Converters should be used only with electric appliances, transformers are used with electronic appliances, and the plug adapters are simply used to allow for a dual-voltage appliance.

Surge protectors are important, and if you plan to use expensive electronic equipment abroad, this is one item you are not going to want to forget to pack.

One particularly worthwhile product is the EuroSurge Protector, perfect to take along on your travels.

It will protect your laptop or PDA against electrical surges and spikes, and can be used with any appliance of less than 8 amps.
