Double Delta miles for someone you dig

Now that Delta has dramatically increased the number of miles required to nab an award ticket, it behooves the budget traveller to take advantage of any means to pad their mileage account. Until recently 50,000 miles and some patience on the phone could get you a round trip coach ticket to Europe. And only a few years ago 80,000 miles and some flexibility could get you across the pond in business. Now the rock bottom coach price is 60,000 miles, and soars as high as 125,000 miles.

Well now that the easy days are over, here's one way to bump up your miles. You've only got a few days left, so head over to Delta for the 100% bonus miles offer when you transfer miles. When you transfer miles to someone else, they receive double the amount of miles you transfer.

Why give your miles away? If you're part of a travelling pair, and even combined you don't have enough miles to get away, at least one of your tickets can be paid for with miles. Say you're trying to get to Europe (like me). My husband and I have 30,000 miles each. He transfers 15,000 miles to me. Now I have 45. Add the bonus and I've suddenly got 60,000 miles, enough to buy one ticket (if I get lucky). Don't however, overlook the cost of transferring the miles. At $.01 per mile, plus the $30 fee, it's going to cost me $180 for those miles. Still not a bad deal for a flight that runs around a thousand bucks these days.
