Budgeting help -- how much do things cost?

Found euros When you're planning a trip, it's easy enough to determine a big chunk of your cost -- you pay for airfare up front, in dollars. But how do you know how much to budget for that daily cup of coffee, bus fare, dinner or museum entrance?

Arthur Frommer has offered help with this chore for the last few years with his Global Price Index. "Where Does the Dollar Do Best" is published monthly and tells travelers what to expect to pay in nine worldwide destinations for a movie ticket, bus fare, cup of regular coffee, bottle of local beer in a bar, three-star hotel room for two, and three-course dinner for one, without alcohol or tip.

Rick Steves shared some on-the-street prices on his blog recently, comparing "Apfels to Pommes," charting relative costs from country to country in twelve popular European destinations, plus his home of Seatle. Here's a sample:

Typical main dish at dinner for a mid-range eatery: Rome - $15, Paris $25 and Amsterdam $22 (Seatle $15).

Either of these sources should help you get a handle on your trip budget. Now if only the euro would slide back a year or two in its value.
